As of July, 2005, intersection reconstruction was complete. There are now traffic signals protecting the crosswalk for the bike path. The median has been removed from the end of the intersection near the bridge, so the travel lanes no longer shift toward the outside edges of the roadway as they approach Cambridge. The alignment of the bike lane in the intersection encourages bicyclists on the sidewalk (like the one shown) to use the bike lane -- but many ride out into it without waiting for the pedestrian signal. These bicyclists are in a poor position for turning motorists to see them. The bicyclist on the road here kept to the left of the turning motor traffic but jumped the red light and took a dive for the bike lane on reaching the intersection. There is no single location that would be correct for a bike lane here. A promising treatment would have been a shared-lane marking, such as Cambridge has used in another location.
